The plan today was to meet at the dive shop at 12:45 and do two dives while Joanna and Xu get taken out on some guided snorkeling. When I woke up it started raining and then POURING. I was a little worried it would affect our activities in the afternoon but figured it would let up since it’s a typical tropical rainstorm.

It didn’t let up…

It rained until past 1:30 but the tide was too low to go on our boat trip. I talked with the dive shop and we rescheduled to tomorrow which is our last day here on the island. We grabbed some lunch and then the girls wanted to get their nails done, I tagged along since I didn’t have anything else to do and I’ve never thought about getting those things for myself before.

I surprisingly had a good time. The lady that attended me was named Sopa and I got a foot scub, manicure, and pedicure. All of it cost $19 which from my understanding was a good price. I’d do the foot scrub again, the other stuff didn’t impress me. While I sat there for an hour I asked her to teach me Thai instead of just awkwardly sitting in silence since she spoke zero English. It feels weird not being able to be polite to people in their own language since English is pretty limited here. Learning some Japanese was definitely very helpful on the last trip but I was familiar with those sounds and phrases from watching anime. Thai is a totally different thing to hear.

I wrote them down so I could practice. I know they’re not spelled correctly but I wrote them as close to how I heard it to be as accurate as possible when speaking:

Sawadika = hello
Kun kap = thank you (male)
Mai au kap = no thank you (male)
Kun ka = thank you (female)
Mai au ka = no thank you (female)
Hod tud ka = sorry
Manaow = lime
Weh la = what time
Tao lai = how much?
Pang = too expensive
Too = cheap
Geen alloy = The food was delicious

One thing I noticed right away when we arrived was that there are a lot of cats here. Basically each storefront had a cat laying out in front or there were random cats running around. We turned the corner yesterday and saw like 5-6 rats each larger than my hand eating at a large bag of raw chicken on the ground so I understand why everyone has a cat. Since I had nothing else to do, here’s a bunch of pictures of the cats I came across

The rest of the day was just wandering around the island looking for snacks to eat. We did make it all the way out to the nicer resorts that are facing the ocean. They basically had their own private beaches which were free of garbage and away from the crowds. If I knew about this area yesterday, I would have much preferred to hang out here.

Joanna spent an hour hunting for seashells, Xu sat under a tree and watched Korean dramas, and I sat on a bridge watching a small stream of water come out of the woods and dig a trench into the beach while it flowed into the ocean. It was kind of mesmerizing because the sides of the stream would melt away the sand and every few minutes a chunk of sand would fall over, kind of like watching a glacier fall apart.

Pretty lazy and non eventful day today, I think I could really get a hang of this vacation life thing 😀
