Hairloss as a result of chemo therapy is straight up depressing. You’re reminded of it every moment of every day as you’ll find hair on your clothes, pillow, and towel. I can’t even scratch my head without seeing a few hairs drop. Since I’m such a neat freak about hair on the bathroom floor this was just too much for me.
I reached out to Becky, a friend from high school who is a hairstylist to see if she would be interested in buzzing my hair off. She’s been following along with the blog since the very beginning. She said she would be honored and would come by in the morning with her stuff.
When she arrived, she admitted that she had not seen the blog I had posted yesterday morning where I recorded myself showing how easy it was for my hair to come out. I gave her a personal demonstration.
I don’t think anyone including myself expected chemo hair to come out so easily since it’s never shown in the media. I appreciated seeing her reaction :O
I got a few requests from people on what to do with my hair and so we started with a funky 80’s fade.
Next it was the mowhawk. I didn’t want to spend the time spiking it up because the act itself would have pulled out most of my hair and cleanup would have been messy.
Finally we went for it and got rid of the rest.
I felt the top of my head and it was soooo weeiiirrdddd. It’s scratchy and sensitive to temperatures. I’m so thankful for Becky to spend an hour of her time to help me out. My quality of life jumped up significantly now that I don’t have to worry about leaving a mess.
If you’re looking for a new salon, she works at Estetica Salon & Spa on Saturdays and Mondays. I’m sure she does more than just buzz cuts.
I noticed in my reflection that I had a small bald spot on the right side of my head. Coincidentally I pulled from the exact same spot when I recorded yesterday’s video and when I showed Becky my hair loss. Eventually the rest of my head is going to look this way, just funny that I randomly pulled twice from the same place. You can also see the scar from when I whacked myself in the head with my wakeboard on Memorial day about 6 years ago and had to go to urgent care to get 13 staples in my head.
BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE!
Joanna came over to pick me up for our date. She said that my facial hair didn’t match the rest of my head so I should shave it off.
So for anyone that’s wondering why I don’t do No Shave November. It’s because I’m unable to grow any substantial facial hair and it looks terrible.
I was going to do a before and after picture but since there were so many steps involved I made an animation instead.
My parents were worried that if I shaved my head, I’d look more like a sick person but they changed their minds after they saw the aftermath. I think it looks really good and I’m a lot happier for it.
Since I’ve basically been a prisoner in my home and at the hospital I managed to convince my parents and Joanna to let me out of the house even with my low white blood cell counts. I promised I wouldn’t touch anything and would bring hand sanitizer with me.
We went to Chickfilla to get dinner and then Target to grab some groceries.
I had to put my hood up because the AC in the store was making my head cold (such a weird feeling). After that we went to REI to look for hats but all they had were on clearance stuff which makes sense since it’s July.
It was super nice just getting out of the house and trying to be “normal” after a month of craziness. I miss seeing Joanna every day and just being around her.
We were only out of the house for about an hour and a half and got back at 8:30. I was feeling my normal level of backache around 9pm and took 1 Tylenol for it. I took a shower and after that I felt a little cold and asked my dad to take my temp. 101.4f…ughhhhh
By this time it was 10pm and our plan was that if I were to get another fever, we would drive to Mayo’s ER otherwise I’d end up stuck at Methodist for days again. Neither of us wanted to do that So I took another Tylenol and played the waiting game.
Half an hour later, I checked my temp again. 100.4f and then another half hour later 99.6f. *whew*
I was relieved that we didn’t have to make the hour and a half drive in the middle of the night but dad still scolded me for leaving the house. Considering I was able to get my temp back down, that Chickfilla sandwich was worth it.
Sidenote: Did someone send this Amazon box of chocolates to me? It didn’t have a note or anything, I just wanted to thank whoever sent me candy.
