This trip has been basically 3 years in the making. The second I came back home from living in Beijing in ’08 I was already contemplating when I would come back either for work or travel.
Considering my past blogging experiences, I usually trail off towards the middle of my trips so given that I will be gone for 18 days. I will make sure that my minimum amount of posts will be at least 18.
Originally I had planned to get roundtrip tickets to and from Shanghai from 12/11-12/30. When I looked at ticket prices for that it was already $1600 and I wouldn’t have enough time to get my visa unless I paid $100 to expedite it, total visa cost would have been around $300. Suddenly last night I got the idea to fly to Hong Kong, get my visa there and then make it up to Shanghai and then fly back home. My cost was $1,112 which is fantastic.
I am flying Continental/United and leaving next Tuesday 12/13 around 9am and won’t arrive in HK until 9pm 12/14. I haven’t determined if I’m flying or taking a train to Shanghai yet, depends on cost I suppose.
I’ll be back on 12/30 in time for new year’s. It would have been awesome to be in China for it but ticket prices went past $2500 so it wouldn’t have been worth it.
